Flossing is an essential part of any oral health care routine. It helps remove plaque and food particles in places that are hard for a toothbrush to reach. To get optimal benefits from flossing, however, it is important to use the following proper technique:
- Pull about 18 to 24 inches of floss and wind most of the floss around each middle finger, leaving an inch or two of floss to work with.
- Hold the floss tightly between your thumbs and index fingers, and slide it gently up and down between each tooth.
- Gently curve the floss around the base of your teeth, ensuring that you go beneath the gum line but avoid cutting the gums with the floss.
- Make sure to use clean sections of floss as you move from tooth to tooth.
It is best to floss to least once a day, usually at bedtime. When done properly, flossing is an excellent way to remove plaque and debris from your teeth.
